Chapter 7 – Dani
As we walked hand in hand toward The Spindrift, I wondered what he was thinking. He didn't want to talk about what had just happened between us and neither did I. It was insane. We'd known each other a whole twenty-four hours. We'd already shared lusty stares and a had our first argument. Things were happening at a rapid pace and despite knowing that getting mixed up with him was a terrible idea, especially where my career was concerned, I let it continue. The last thing I needed was my new boss thinking I was only interested in his son, but I wouldn't have traded that kiss or the feeling of my hand in his for anything in the world.
“I get the addiction thing,” I said, not wanting either of us to get lost in our own thoughts.
“Yeah?” he said, looking over at me.
“Yeah.” I shook my head. “My mom,” I paused. “And my dad.”
“That's terrible.”
“It wasn't great, that's for sure.” I spent a lot of time accepting my parents for their flaws and forgiving them for the shit hand they'd dealt me. “I never even knew my mother. She chose her addiction over me as soon as I was born. I don't even know what it was. Drugs or booze. Whatever. She took off as soon as she had me.” Dylan let me keep talking. “And my dad, well... he liked to gamble. He thought he was actually doing me a favor splitting when I was little. I don't even know where he ended up,” I confessed, trying not to sound bitter.
“Where did you live?” he asked.
“I started out with my dad, and then went to my grandmother.” I cleared my throat and tried not to even think about the tears I knew liked to well up when I told people my story—which was few and far between. “After she passed away, I went into the foster care system. Bounced around a bit before finishing out my sentence in a group home.”
“Your sentence?”
“Not actual prison,” I assured him. “Being a ward of the state sometimes feels like it though. I probably shouldn't call it that, huh?”
“You can call it whatever you'd like,” he said, pulling me down along one the docks that branched off from the main stretch. “I'm sorry you had to live that way.”
“Not your fault,” I said with the not-giving-shit tone I'd perfected over the years. When I looked into his eyes I knew he wasn't buying it.
“It's not, but it sucks.” The compassion in his eyes wasn't laced with pity. It was understanding more than anything else. “My mom died when I was Minx's age. So I get life not being fair.”
“It really isn't,” I said. The thoughts of him and Minx not having their mom around were not adding to my do-not-cry stance. Just when I thought I was going to give in and let my tears fall, he pressed a soft kiss on my lips. The sensation was sweet and welcomed.
